Start With the Right Foundation
For new drivers in B.C., the Graduated Licensing Program (GLP) is designed to help you gain driving experience gradually. The first step is getting your Class 7L learner’s licence, followed by supervised practice and the Class 7 road test to obtain your N licence.
ICBC recommends using resources such as Learn to Drive Smart to prepare for the knowledge test and Tuning Up for Drivers to prepare for the road test. ICBC also recommends getting plenty of on-road practice with an experienced driver or licensed driving school.
What You Should Learn Before Your Road Test
A good driving lesson should prepare you for real traffic—not just a test route.

ICBC identifies intersections, lane changes, parking, backing up, hill parking, and other everyday driving skills as important areas for road-test preparation.
Small Habits Can Make a Big Difference
Safe driving is built through consistent habits. For example, ICBC recommends maintaining at least a two-second following distance in good conditions, increasing it on high-speed roads and in poor weather or slippery conditions.
New drivers also need to understand their licence restrictions. L and N drivers must follow important GLP rules, including zero blood alcohol and zero blood drug concentration and restrictions on electronic-device use.
Important GLP Changes Coming in 2026
Starting October 19, 2026, eligible drivers with a clean driving record will no longer need a second road test to move from the novice stage to a Class 5 licence with restrictions. Instead, ICBC will use a Driving Record Assessment, followed by a 12-month restriction period.
This makes building and maintaining a safe driving record even more important. Every drive is an opportunity to develop good habits.
