Why Crashes Happen — And How You Can Help Prevent Them

No driver can eliminate risk on the road. But understanding why crashes happen can help you make safer decisions and avoid situations that put you, your passengers, and others at risk.

At Drive With Ali, we believe good driving starts with awareness. Here are some of the most common risks every new driver should understand.

📱 Distracted Driving

Your attention belongs on the road. A quick text, notification or phone call can take your eyes and mind away from driving when you need them most. Put your phone away and stay focused.

🍺 Alcohol-Impaired Driving

If you’re planning to drink, plan your ride home before you start drinking. Choose a sober driver, taxi, rideshare, or public transit instead of taking the risk of driving impaired.

🌿 Drug-Impaired Driving

Cannabis and other drugs can affect your ability to concentrate, react and make safe decisions. If you’re impaired, don’t drive. Arrange a safe ride with a sober friend, designated driver, taxi or transit.

🚗 Speed

Driving too fast reduces the time you have to react and can make a crash much more serious. Slow down, leave enough space between vehicles and pass only when it is safe to do so.

⚠️ High-Risk Driving

Following too closely and failing to yield are common dangerous driving behaviours. Stay patient, maintain a safe following distance and always give other road users the space and right-of-way they need.

🅿️ Parking Lot Safety

Parking lots may look low-risk, but crashes can happen quickly because of pedestrians, reversing vehicles and limited visibility. Slow down, check carefully and watch for people and vehicles around you. When appropriate, backing into a parking space can also improve visibility when leaving.

Safe Driving Starts With Good Habits

Most crashes don’t happen because drivers don’t know how to operate a vehicle. They often happen because of distraction, impairment, excessive speed, poor observation or risky decisions.

Learning these risks early can help you develop better habits for life—not just habits for passing a road test.

At Drive With Ali, we help students build practical skills, improve observation and develop the confidence to make safer decisions behind the wheel.

Learn with confidence. Drive with care. Arrive safely.
